Kim – Landfill Operator/Municipal Dozer Operator

What made you interested into getting into your field?

I have always wanted to run heavy equipment and show other women it is possible for us to work in the same field(s) as men. What do you love about your field?

I love going to work and seeing the faces of people who I feel don’t think that women should be running a dozer or operating a landfill because its “not” what a woman’s job should be. It all comes down to stereotyping. I have always proven that anything a man can do so can a woman. It’s important for younger girls to know they can do anything they put their minds to and to always believe in themselves. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it! To me, that is more motivation to prove others wrong!

What types of challenges have you faced as a woman and how have you overcome them?

When I was first hired my boss didn’t think I would be able to do the job. On the first day I jumped in the dozer I proved him wrong. I took the Municipal Dozer Operator course and received my ticket. My instructor told me I would climb the ladder fast as I had the drive and determination to be all I could be and more.

Is there any advice you would give to women entering the field?

Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do it! I have a few friends that work in different field’s of work with men and they prove that we are just as good at these jobs as the men are.
